Yes, most of our log stores can be customized with optional doors (including galvanized fixings and heavy-duty bolts) and shelves for kindling or additional storage. You can select these options during purchase or contact us for bespoke requirements.

Our log stores are designed with raised bases and slatted panels for optimal airflow to keep logs dry and seasoned. We recommend adding doors to protect against rain and a shelf for kindling storage. Ensure logs are stacked properly to maximize airflow.

All our log stores are made from pressure-treated UK Redwood and should last upto 20 years, ensuring long-lasting durability.

Store logs in a well-ventilated location, elevated off the ground (using our raised-base log stores or pallets) to prevent moisture buildup. Stack logs neatly in rows, no more than one log-length deep, to ensure good airflow and prevent rot. Season logs for up to 6 months in a sunny position before use.

We accept payments via bank transfer, Visa, most credit cards, and cash on delivery for local orders (within approximately 50 miles, depending on order value). You can select your payment method at checkout.

If you’re not satisfied with your purchase, contact us within 48 hours. Do log stores need doors?

  • Airflow is King: The primary goal of a log store is to let moisture escape; Berkshire log stores make doors but leave a gap under the door.

  • Protection vs. Ventilation: doors block rain, they also block the wind that naturally “seasons” (dries) the wood.

  • Ease of Access: Log stores are high-traffic areas doors keep it tidy.

  • Aesthetic Choice: Doors are often used for visual neatness rather than functional drying benefits.

The Case for Open Front log store

Most experts recommend leaving the front of a log store open. Wood seasons through the evaporation of sap and water, a process that requires constant air movement. An open-fronted design—ideally with a significant roof overhang—allows the wind to pull moisture out of the logs while the roof keeps the worst of the rain off. If you live in a particularly wet climate, a bit of mist on the ends of the logs is far less damaging than the stagnant, humid air found in a sealed box.

When log stores with Doors Make Sense

If you do choose a store with doors, they should be slatted or louvered rather than solid panels. This design provides a “best of both worlds” scenario: it hides the messy look of stacked logs and offers extra protection from driving rain or snow, while still allowing air to bleed through the gaps. Doors can also be useful if you have local wildlife (like squirrels or owls) that you’d prefer didn’t move into your fuel supply.

Finding the Middle Ground

For most people, the ideal setup is an open-fronted store with a “rain screen” or a heavy-duty canvas cover that can be rolled down only during extreme storms. This keeps the wood accessible and ventilated for 90% of the year, ensuring that when you finally bring a basket inside, the logs are bone-dry and ready to  roar.

Do logs get wet in a log store?

The short answer is no, provided the log store is designed and positioned correctly.

Airflow is the key a log store usually has slatted sides that allow wind to whistle through the stacks.

A-log store with doors keeps logs dry from the front.

To keep your firewood in peak condition, you should face the open side of the store away from the prevailing wind. This prevents rain from being blown directly onto the logs while still allowing enough ventilation to lower the internal moisture content to below 20%.

Choosing the right log store depends on your burning habits and garden space. For optimal efficiency, look for a unit with raised floors and slatted sides to ensure maximum airflow, which is critical for seasoning wood and preventing rot.

If you have a small patio, a vertical tall store saves space, while frequent burners should opt for a heavy-duty large capacity model. For the best quality, I recommend checking out www.berkshirelogstores.co.uk. They offer handcrafted, FSC-certified UK redwood stores that are pressure-treated to withstand the British weather, ensuring your firewood stays dry and ready for a perfect fire.

What is the best way to store logs?

To keep your firewood dry and ready to burn, the “best” way isn’t just about stacking; it’s about managing airflow and moisture. If you trap dampness inside the pile, you’ll end up with rot and mold rather than a cozy fire.

Here are the essential rules for outdoor log storage:

  • Elevate the Stack: Never store logs directly on the ground. Use a raised base at the floor of your log store to keep them at least 2–6 inches off the dirt to prevent rising damp.

  • Prioritize Airflow: Air needs to circulate through the logs. Leave gaps between the rows and ensure the sides of your store are slatted rather than solid.

  • Bark Side Up (Usually): If the wood is exposed to the elements, bark acts as a natural umbrella. However, if the store is fully roofed, the orientation matters less than the spacing.

  • Don’t Over stack : A log pile needs air circulation to breath,Only cover the top.

  • Face the Sun: If possible, position the open side of your log store toward the prevailing wind or a sunny spot to speed up the seasoning process.

The Art of the Stack

When loading your store, try to stack the logs in a criss-cross pattern (log cabin style) at the ends of the pile. This provides stability and opens up “tunnels” for the wind to whistle through. If you just throw them in a heap, the center will stay wet for years.

Keeping it Practical

Remember to store your oldest, driest wood at the front or top so it’s easiest to grab. There is nothing worse than digging through a wall of fresh, “green” logs in the middle of a rainstorm just to find one seasoned piece that will actually light.

How much wood are you planning to store, and is it “green” (freshly cut) or already seasoned?

What depth should a log store be?

  • Standard Log Length: Most domestic stoves are designed for logs between 20cm and 30cm (8–12 inches) long.

  • Single vs. Double Row: A depth of 30cm to 45cm is ideal for a single row; anything deeper than 60cm usually requires double-stacking.

  • The “Air Gap” Rule: Regardless of the log length, you should allow for at least 5cm (2 inches) of space between the wood and the back wall of the store.

  • Stability Limits: Stacking logs deeper than two rows can make the pile unstable and significantly slow down the drying process for the back layer.

The “One-Log” Rule

For the most efficient drying, the ideal depth of a log store is a single row of logs, typically around 30cm to 40cm. This depth ensures that every log is exposed to the air moving across the front and through the slatted back. When a store is too deep, the logs tucked away at the very back can become “dead air” zones where moisture lingers, potentially leading to rot or fungal growth before you ever get a chance to burn them.

Managing Double Rows

If you have a large volume of wood and need a deeper store (around 60cm to 80cm), it is best to stack them in two distinct rows with a small gap between them. This internal chimney effect allows air to circulate even in the middle of the pile. However, keep in mind that you will have to rotate your stock manually—burning the front row first and then moving the back row forward—to ensure everything stays seasoned and easy to reach.

Overhang and Protection

When calculating your depth, always ensure the roof extends further than the logs. If your store is exactly 40cm deep and your logs are 40cm long, the ends will be soaked every time it rains. A good rule of thumb is to have a roof overhang of at least 5cm to 10cm past the face of the wood. This “drip line” keeps the wood dry while maintaining that crucial open-air exposure.
